NYPD Begins 3-Week Traffic Enforcement Crackdown
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The NYPD is conducting a citywide traffic safety enforcement initiative over the next three weeks.
It starts Monday and continues through July 6.
Police will be focusing on speeding, driving while using a cellphone, improper turns, disobeying traffic signs and failing to yield to pedestrians.
The traffic safety operation will focus on the city's most problematic intersections, CBS 2 reported.
The latest crackdown is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's "Vision Zero'' initiative aimed at reducing traffic and pedestrian deaths.
The NYPD issued 4,814 tickets during a two-day crackdown on speeding in the five boroughs last month. Brooklyn led with the most tickets at 1,249, followed by 1,219 tickets for Queens, 1,175 tickets for Manhattan, 782 tickets for the Bronx, and 389 tickets for Staten Island.
Also last month, officers issued 5,258 tickets during a two-day crackdown on cellphone use while driving and failure to yield to pedestrians. The summonses included 1,254 for failure to yield to pedestrians, 2,938 for using a cellphone while driving, 1,066 and texting while driving.
