Fentanyl-laced drugs, guns found in Queens home where 10-year-old child lived, police say

NEW YORK - The NYPD arrested five people after they say they uncovered a large amount of drugs laced with fentanyl inside of a Queens home where a 10-year-old boy was living.

Repairs were being made Wednesday afternoon to the door that was damaged during the early morning raid. Neighbors said they didn't know what was going on behind closed doors at the home on 100th Avenue in Queens.

Police said they found four loaded guns, including a high-capacity rifle, ammunition and several kilo presses during the raid. 

"Approximately four kilos of cocaine and heroin, and it's the belief... evidence was also there - of fentanyl was mixed there also," Deputy Chief Jerry O'Sullivan said. 

Child lived across the hall from fentanyl-laced drugs, police say

Most alarming of all, police said a 10-year-old child was there, related to one of the five adults arrested. 

"There was a second floor bedroom where this young child lived at, was residing, sleeping in his room. Right across the hall from that child was a recovery of this dangerous drugs, right across the hall," O'Sullivan said. "The child was removed from the home and ACS was contacted, and was placed in care of an additional person known to the department." 

"He plays with my brother and cousins. He comes over almost every day. He's like my cousin. He's family," a child in the neighborhood said.

Neighbors express shock

Neighbors said they never noticed anything suspicious. 

"Since I been here since '77, you could call me the nosey neighbor. I know when something is out of order. I haven't picked up anything. I'm surprised to hear what happened," neighbor Mona Ware said. "I'm walking my dog. They sit on the steps, barbecue and that's it." 

"Would you ever think they'd have all these firearms in there, and drugs?" CBS New York's Alice Gainer asked,

"Never. No, I didn't think that would happen. They would be washing the cars, and I didn't think anything illegal was going on," Ware said. 

Another neighbor who lives a few houses away said multiple rooms are rented out in the home. She was upset, and said the neighbors she knows wouldn't allow drugs around the child. 

"There's people that were innocent in the house," she said. 

"His mom go to work faithfully, so I don't know. Being at the wrong place at the wrong time," another neighbor said.

Since neighbors said they didn't know about any illegal activity, what tipped off police?

"This began from the field intelligence officer. Information was obtained about a specific person that was known to deal with firearms and narcotics," O'Sullivan said. 

Police have not named those arrested – they say the investigation is ongoing. 

Word of the arrest comes on the heels of the death of 1-year-old Nicholas Dominici, who died after being exposed to fentanyl at a day care in the Bronx. Three other children were hospitalized due to exposure to the drug. The day care owner and her husband's cousin were both arrested and face federal charges. Police are searching for the day care owner's husband.
