NYC Shootings: At Least 3 Dead From Another Night Of Gun Violence

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It was another violent night in New York City, with at least nine shootings and three people killed, police said Thursday

Several of the incidents happened in Brooklyn, within a span of just a few hours, CBS2's Jenna DeAngelis reported.

Children boarding a school bus on Menahan Street in Bushwick walked by a crime scene Thursday morning: a bullet hole in a car, shell casings on the ground and remnants of a cookout the night before.

"It started somewhere around noon, a barbecue, play basketball, everything was going fine. Once 11:15 hit, boom, that's it, everything changed, completely," said Robert Aulesta.

He was in his apartment when he heard gunshots.

"They were very close and I just dropped down to the floor,"  Aulesta said. "Chaos. People screaming, 'Get an ambulance! Get an ambulance!'"

Police said a 35-year-old man was on his way to the cookout when a large fight broke out. He was shot and pronounced dead at the hospital. It's unclear if he was the intended target or an innocent bystander.

Police have a 30-year-old person of interest in custody. A gun was also recovered.

There were at least five other shootings in Brooklyn since 9 p.m. Wednesday -- from East Flatbush, to Gravesend, and three in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

In one Bed-Stuy shooting, police said a 25-year-old on Lafayette Street was approached by a suspect who shot him in both legs.

"This is crazy. The kids can't come outside. The summer just started and they can't come outside," said Sharawn Vinson.

Vinson said there have been several shootings in the neighborhood this week. She pointed to campaign signs in her complex, sharing a message with present and future city leaders:

"Come here, see what our kids need," Vinson said. "This is all they got and now this is getting shot up. So, we still in quarantine, we might as well lock ourselves back in the house."

There was a similar scene in the Bronx, where police said two people were shot around 11:30 p.m. near Marion Avenue and East 194th Street.

A 29-year-old woman did not survive and a 31-year-old man was listed in critical condition at St. Barnabas Hospital.

They're among 11 victims in the city's nine Wednesday shootings.

The violent night added to the growing list of shootings this year. As of June 13, there have been 634 shootings -- a 64% increase compared to 2020.

"We never stop, we keep fighting back. So, I'm confident that we are turning the tide consistently, and we will ultimately get back to where we were pre-pandemic," Mayor Bill de Blasio said Thursday.

Residents hope something will change.
