Mother, daughter hit by stray bullets in Bronx in 1 of 9 weekend shootings in New York City
NEW YORK -- Multiple police investigations are underway Monday after at least a dozen people were shot in nine incidents across New York City over the weekend.
A 34-year-old man was killed in Harlem. Among the injured are an innocent teenager and her mother who were inside a Bronx convenience store when bullets started to fly, CBS2's John Dias reported.
At least 12 people were shot in nine separate incidents since 6 p.m. Sunday, according to detectives.
The Bronx community has been on edge because the two men believed to be responsible for the shooting at the convenience store are still on the run.
Michelle O'Toole held her 6-year-old grandson's hand tightly while walking by the store - riddled with fresh bullet holes now covered with tape and stickers - at the corner of Southern Boulevard and Jennings Street.
"It's sad that the kids got to grow up in this type of environment," O'Toole said. "I live right around the corner, and I'm hearing about this day after day after day. I feel like it's gotten outrageous."
According to detectives, an innocent 46-year-old woman and her 13-year-old daughter, who were visiting from San Antonio, Texas, were shot by stray bullets inside the store at around 9 p.m. Sunday.
The woman suffered a graze wound, but her daughter was shot in the hand. Both were recovering in the hospital.
"I came outside. I seen the store was marked off, caution, do not pass," Shaquasha Cloud said. "It's children that's getting hurt. Children, innocent children."
"It makes me feel very unsafe," Ryan McCloskey said.
Police believe the men responsible shot another innocent woman a few blocks away from the store.
In Chelsea, bullets hit cars and ambulances were parked outside a dance club. Just after midnight, a man was shot in the face.
In Brownsville, four men were shot. One was hospitalized in critical condition after a dispute on Rockaway Avenue.
On the radio, Mayor Eric Adams blamed overall crime on the courts.
"It is extremely unfortunate that our criminal justice system, from the inability to move cases through the system, to our judges, to how we prosecute cases in some of the laws," Adams said.
The latest NYPD data show both shooting victims and incidents were up last week -- almost 35% higher for victims, and slightly more than 17% for incidents. But they were down compared to last year -- nearly 7% for victims, and 11% for incidents.
