NYC Food Truck Lunch: Thai Chicken Curry Pie From DUB Pies

Another new food truck hit the street last week, but you may already know DUB Pies from their storefronts in Brooklyn and the West Village.

DUB Pies stands for Down Under Bakery Pies, and they serve savory meat pies like the ones popular in Australia and New Zealand.

They have shepherd's pie, beef & cheese pie, and a few other pies like that (including veggie options) on the menu. The one that really caught our attention was the Thai chicken curry pie, which we ordered for $7.

Since this was a new food truck, we also ordered a spinach roll for $4 to try a couple of different things.

We started with the spinach roll, which was about 6" long, and baked to a golden brown. 

Inside was thickly-packed spinach with some cheese mixed in. The spinach was lemony enough to notice, and to pick up the flavor, but it did not make the roll tart.

There was ricotta cheese and garlic mixed in with the spinach, and small pieces of feta cheese were dotted throughout the roll.

The pastry dough was tasty, but pretty flaky, so be prepared to clean up after eating the spinach roll.

Moving on, the Thai chicken curry pie was made with green curry, kaffir lime leaves, ginger, lemongrass, coconut milk, mushrooms, peas, green onions and chili.

On the first bite, the flavor of lemongrass was immediately apparent, as was some heat from the chili, but underlying it all was the taste of white meat chicken.

This was a pretty complex, savory pie. Lately, we haven't been much into lemongrass, but it was very good here.

The crust on the pie was thicker and more like a regular pie crust than the thin crust of the spinach roll.

The DUB Pies truck was a nice change of pace for lunch. You certainly won't find any other Kiwi food trucks on the NYC street.
