NYC Food Truck Lunch: Assorted Bao From Fun Buns NYC

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City food trucks.

We always enjoy a little variety with lunch, and with 3 bao for $10, Fun Buns NYC offers a few different options for your lunch money.

Bao are steamed Chinese buns that are fairly easy to eat walking around, making for a good street food snack or lunch.

There are different types of bao. Some are like dumplings, but the bao at Fun Buns are more similar to Chinese tacos served in soft, puffy, doughy shells.

To get a variety, we ordered one each of Peking duck, soy sauce chicken and bulgogi beef bao. FYI, the duck was $1 extra, which came to $11 for lunch.

Starting with the Peking duck bao, we could taste a touch of hoisin sauce on the meat, and the 5-spice powder came through as well. These two ingredients make for an excellent combination. There were cucumbers and scallions on top of the duck, and the meat was not fatty, which duck can sometimes be.

The soy sauce chicken also had cucumbers and scallions, but there was also pickled daikon and carrots on the bao. The chicken included a joint, which was a little disconcerting. When hacking up meat, please make sure the joints are removed.

The final bao was bulgogi beef. This one was topped with kimchi, scallions, and a garlicky mayo. Unfortunately, the beef was fatty, which was disappointing. We've eaten here before, and the beef was not fatty previously, so we're willing to give them the benefit of the doubt this time.

With the amount of mayo, and the liquid from the kimchi, the bulgogi beef bao was quite messy to eat, too. It didn't turn out to be good "walking around" food. Glad we were at our desk for lunch.

We've had better meals at Fun Buns NYC in the past, and hope today's lunch was an aberration. The duck was good, but the chicken and beef could both have been better.

You can find Fun Buns on Twitter here, on Facebook here, and their website is here.
