NYC Councilwoman Margaret Chin Introducing Bill To Measure Noise Pollution
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A City Council bill would gauge the noise levels in New York's neighborhoods.
Councilwoman Margaret Chin's bill would require the city Department of Environmental Protection to install palm-size detectors to collect data on noise pollution, WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported.
"It's to really measure ... neighborhoods where you're near a lot of traffic, construction," as well as trains, said Chin, D-Manhattan.
She said places exceeding 65 decibels would be red-flagged. Chin is hoping the surveying can begin next year.
"Experts agree that 65 decibels is the average ambient noise for us to carry on a regular, normal conversation," Chin said. "But in some areas, you would have to raise your voice because of the noise."
Chin added that the issue should be taken seriously because noise can affect health.
"Nowadays with all this technology, we should be able to monitor the noise level at a minimal cost," she said.
