NYC building service workers rally, call for new contract

NEW YORK -- There was a rally and an important vote Wednesday by city building services workers.

On Park Avenue, workers and their supporters rallied to demand the Realty Advisory Board on Labor Relations agree to a new contract.

The deal would cover 32,000 workers across New York City, including porters, doorpersons and superintendents.

Gov. Kathy Hochul was at the rally to give her support.

"They call you essential workers and that sounds nice, but if they're that essential, why don't we pay them what they deserve?" she said.

Workers also voted to give their bargaining committee the power to call for a strike if deemed necessary. A strike would impact more than 3,000 buildings and 555,000 apartments across the city.
