NYC Bars Expect To Score Big During World Cup
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The timing of this year's World Cup could not be better for the thousands of New York City bars showing the games.
The World Cup begins Thursday in Brazil. Most of the games will have start times from noon to 6 p.m. New York time.
"The times work fantastically," Pat Burke, owner of the Kent Ale House in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, told WCBS 880's Marla Diamond. "A lot of the bigger games are a little later in the afternoon, which actually plays well into having a much bigger crowd for those games."
"The time, it is absolutely fantastic," agreed Patty McCarthy, owner of the soccer mecca Nevada Smith's on Third Avenue in Manhattan. "This is why I'm so confident that everybody will be out to watch these games."
Burke said the Kent Ale House is expecting so many fans that he has added televisions and a new sound system.
"We just took this as the opportunity to do all that," he said.
McCarthy said he is anticipating record crowds at Nevada Smith's.
"The World Cup -- this one has more excitement than ever," he said.
At Studio Square in Astoria, Queens, manager Pete Mason is expecting 1,600 fans per game. The 30,000-square-foot beer garden features a large high-definition video wall.
"This is probably as close as you're going to get to a stadium experience being in New York," Mason told Diamond.
On West 33rd Street in Midtown, The Football Factory is also getting ready for World Cup fans, said owner Liam McGreevey.
"We still have a lot of work to do, but the whole place is like 52 televisions," he said. "We've got two projector screens."
