MTA Begins Training Employees On No. 7 Line Extension
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has begun training subway workers on routing and operating trains on the No. 7 subway line extension to Manhattan's far west side.
The new 1.5-mile stretch is set to open this summer.
Trains have begun rolling to West 34th Street and 11th Avenue to make sure subway crews are comfortable with the extension, WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported.
"You know when they operate things they need to be familiar from one end to the other, in terms of curves, signals, basically they need to know where everything is," MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz said.
Ortiz said train operators, tower operators and dispatchers are all part of the process. The two-day training courses began last Tuesday and run through Thursday.
The MTA released a video providing a glimpse of the new tunnel and of workers being trained.
The agency expects about 35,000 riders a day will go to the new Hudson Yards station.
"The project, as it stands now, is 99 percent complete," Ortiz said.
