NJ TRANSIT Bus Spotted Going Wrong Way On Garden State Parkway

PERTH AMBOY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- An NJ TRANSIT bus made drivers do a double take recently, riding the wrong way into oncoming traffic.

As CBS2's Meg Baker reported, the incident was caught on video and got quite a reaction from commuters.

"Is that going the wrong direction?" a man named Eric said at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. "Wow, how did that happen?"

Riders buying their bus passes at the terminal were shocked when CBS2's Baker showed them pictures of the NJ TRANSIT bus going the wrong way.

NJ 101.5 released a YouTube video of the incident.

"Kind of scary someone in that condition would be driving," said commuter Mary Smith.

"A New Jersey Transit bus going the wrong way – that's very frightening," said a woman named Linda.

"It's kind of scary if a huge bus is going the wrong way on the road," said a man named Adam.

Al Young snapped photos near Exit 127 of the Garden State Parkway early this past Thursday before the sun came up.

"So as I'm making the right turn and come around, I see headlights towards me," Young said.

The bus was sitting on the shoulder with its lights on.

"The 440 towards the Outer Bridge going into Staten Island, and on the right side, there's an exit right there that says Smith Street, Perth Amboy," Young said.

It still was not clear late Sunday how the bus turned around.

"He was in a bad spot, I mean, he would have to be guided backwards all the way down to 1/3rd of a mile, or he would have to hang a U-turn, and you can't hang a U-turn right in the middle of the highway because everybody's coming down, so he would have to need some kind of police help or something," Young said.

A lot of unanswered questions remained late Sunday. An NJ TRANSIT spokesman said the agency is vigorously looking into the situation.
