NJ TRANSIT Bus Driver Dies After Head On Collision With Garbage Truck; 4 Others Hurt

MAPLEWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- The driver of a NJ TRANSIT bus died Tuesday evening after an earlier head-on collision with a garbage truck in Essex County.

According to NJ TRANSIT, the bus was traveling westbound on Springfield Avenue when it crashed into a Roselle Trucking Co. truck just outside the Hilton Bus Garage entrance in Maplewood just after 12:30 p.m.

 

No customers were on board the Route No. 25 bus at the time of the accident. The driver, identified as Larry Wiley, 65, was rushed to University Hospital in Newark where prosecutors say he was pronounced dead.

Four people on the dump truck, including the driver, were rushed to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Springfield Avenue was closed in both directions for several hours as authorities investigated the crash.
