NJ Lawmakers Listen To Pleas To Extend Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Into Bergen County
TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Some northern New Jersey mayors met with lawmakers on Wednesday to push for extending NJ Transit's light rail north of its last Hudson County stop.
As WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported, right now, Sen. Loretta Weinberg says she and Senate President Steve Sweeney could only listen to the Bergen County mayors' pleas to finally extend the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail into Bergen County.
"So that is an issue that the legislature has to address," she said.
Weinberg said those in her district working in the city mainly either drive or take the bus to a Port Authority terminal-- which is not equipped to handle 240,000 riders a day.
"Versus the marble World Trade Center station that handles 40,000 people a day," she said.
The WTC also has a new PATH station, so she says expanding the rail and getting more riders on trains is the way to go.
