New Jersey Set To Ban Landlords From Asking Tenants About Criminal History
TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- New Jersey could soon ban landlords from denying housing applications based on a tenant's criminal record.
Gov. Phil Murphy is expected to sign the Fair Chance in Housing Act after it passed in the state legislature.
Also known as "banning the box," the law removes a question on housing applications about a person's criminal history.
Advocates say it's a big step toward ending housing discrimination against people who have served time in jail.
