NJ Lawmakers To Take Another Shot At Passing Gun Safety Bill
PRINCETON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A renewed effort is underway by New Jersey State Senate President Steve Sweeney and other officials to enact another gun safety bill.
The measure would require perspective gun buyers to notify the police if they sought to expunge mental health records, WCBS 880's Kelly Waldron reported.
"There's nothing to work with on this bill," Sweeney said. "This bill is simple."
The measure passed both houses of the Legislature unanimously, but Gov. Chris Christie shot it down and rewrote it into a set of mental health reforms he proposed last year. An attempt was made to override the veto last month.
"Now in the governor's veto, it makes no reference to the issue at hand," Sen. Fred Madden, a sponsor, said.
Sweeney plans to post the bill for a second attempt at an override on Oct. 22.
"This is a mental health issue," Sweeney said. "It's a gun safety issue, and we are not going to walk away from this."
