3-Year-Old Girl Struck, Seriously Injured By Ambulance In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A 3-year-old girl was seriously injured when she was hit by an ambulance in New Jersey's largest city, authorities said.

Essex County prosecutors say the accident occurred Tuesday afternoon in the area of Lyons Avenue and Hobson Street in Newark.

They say the ambulance was heading to pick up a patient at a nearby hospital and did not have its lights or sirens activated. The name of the ambulance service involved in the crash has not been disclosed.

The girl was hospitalized with injuries that were described as life-threatening, but further details were not disclosed. Her name has not been released.

No other injuries were reported.

No charges have been filed in the accident, which remains under investigation.
