Newest L.I. Millionaire In Shock After Discovering $20 Million Jackpot
SHIRLEY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - New York's newest Mega Millions winner had to literally be smacked into his new reality.
As WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported from Shirley, when a lotto player scanned his ticket at the JackSpot! convenience store and it revealed a $20 million Mega Millions jackpot, store employee Laura Marckesano said the lucky guy wouldn't believe it.
"He asked if the machine was broken, and I said why. He said because it said big winner. He was in shock," said Marckesano. "I said 'are you OK to go home or should I call you a cab?' And I said wait a minute, you can call a limo!"
Marckesano said she literally had to smack the 48-year-old Southampton Hospital worker into his new reality.
"Well I didn't mean to but yeah, I smacked a millionaire," Marckesano told Xirinachs. "It was several times but then when I stood right in his face, I said, 'yo, $20 million!' I had to convince him."
Marckesano said the new multi-millionaire known only as Cameron told her he won't let the big win change who he is.
Cameron was a winner in the March 25 drawing. The winning ticket was sold at the Gascon gas station in Coram.
He has the option of a pretax lump sum of $11.1 mllion or a $20 million annuity, according to a lottery spokesperson.
Mega Millions is played in 43 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
