Newark Water Crisis: National Action Network To Rally In Support Of Mayor Ras Baraka

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – The National Action Network plans to lead a rally today in support of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and the city's efforts to address lead in the water.

Community leaders, clergy and local elected officials – including the mayors of Plainfield and Orange – are expected to attend the rally outside City Hall.

Newark has been dealing with high levels of lead in the drinking water for some time. Earlier this month, the Environmental Protection Agency determined the water filters the city distributed were not working properly.

So the city has been handing out bottled water to residents in some neighborhoods. A lawsuit is fighting to have other areas included, as well.

Where To Get Help

Families in the Pequannock service area with lead service lines who have received filters can pick up water at the following locations:

  • The City of Newark Department of Health and Wellness, 110 William St.
  • Bo Porter Sports Complex, 378 Lyons Ave.
  • Boylan Street Recreation Center, 916 South Orange Ave.
  • Vince Lombardi Center, 201 Bloomfield Ave.
