Scrap Metal Fire At Port Newark Sends Heavy Smoke Into Surrounding Neighborhoods
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A fire at a scrap yard in Newark was still burning Tuesday evening, hours after it started.
The flames broke out around 6 a.m. in the port area.
Chopper 2 flew over Port Newark as crews used heavy equipment to move the burning metal toward pits of water.
The fire sent a towering cloud of smoke into the sky.
New York City's emergency management tweeted that Manhattan and Bronx residents may see or smell the smoke from the fire.
No injuries have been reported.
New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection says air quality levels remain normal.
