Roof Collapses At School In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- The roof collapsed into a classroom area in a school in Newark Friday, officials said.

Around 12:53 p.m. Friday, Newark police officers and firefighters were called to the Maria L. Varisco Charter School on Woodside Avenue after reports that the roof had collapsed, police said.

No students were in the school at the time, and the staff members who were present were safely evacuated, police said.

No one was injured in the collapse, police said.

The roof collapsed into a second-floor classroom area, police said. The Newark Department of Engineering examined the building and found that it was structurally stable, police said.

The cause of the collapse remained under investigation late Friday.
