United Flight Sent Back To Gate At Newark Due Report Of To Landing Gear Fire

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A United Airlines plane was sent back to the gate at Newark Liberty International Airport Wednesday, after flames were reported in the landing gear.

United Airlines Flight 70, a Boeing 757 aircraft, reported a landing gear problem while on the taxiway at the airport waiting to depart for Amsterdam, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

An aircraft behind the United plane reported flames on the United plane's landing gear at 6:20 p.m., the FAA said. There did not actually turn out to be flames.

Other reports indicated a smoke condition that appeared to be near the airplane's brakes.

Airport firefighters responded, and the aircraft will be towed to the gate, the FAA said.

A total of 135 passengers were on board, as well as crewmembers, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey told 1010 WINS.
