Police: Man Caught With More Than 6,300 Fireworks In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A man was busted with more than 6,300 fireworks in Newark this week.

Police in Newark have been cracking down on illegal fireworks in an effort to reduce injuries, according to a police news release. A resident called police around 7 p.m. Tuesday to report a man selling fireworks from a parked car in the 200 block of Vassar Avenue, police said.

Officers drove to Vassar Avenue and found Ahmad Harris, 35, looking in the trunk of his car, police said.

As officers approached, they noticed the trunk was full of fireworks, police said. The officers confiscated the fireworks and arrested Harris on charges of possession of illegal fireworks, police said.

The fireworks that officers seized totaled more than 6,300, police said. They included Bunker Bombs, hundreds of Bottle Rockets of varying sizes, Boomers, Festival Shells, Saturn Missiles, Roman Candles, and numerous other types of fireworks.

Police Director Anthony Ambrose applauded the officers for the arrest.

"Getting these fireworks off our streets, may have saved someone from serious injury or possibly death," Ambrose said in a news release. "We will continue our zero-tolerance enforcement efforts and we urge the public to help us by reporting those using or possessing illegal fireworks."
