Officer Stabbed, Another Hurt Breaking Up Fight In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- An officer was stabbed and a second officer was hurt while trying to break up a street brawl in Newark early Friday morning, police said.

About 50 people were involved in the fight that broke out at 3 a.m. at Elizabeth Avenue and Branford Street.

A police sergeant suffered "severe" stab wounds to the arm, but he's expected to recover, Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said.

A female detective was punched in the face, knocked to the ground and kicked in the head, Ambrose said.

One man who lives across the street said this is what happens when the bars let out, 1010 WINS' John Montone reported.

"Like 2 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 4 o'clock in the morning," he said. "Real loud. I can't sleep."

Both officers were taken to the hospital in stable condition. Police cleared the scene just before 4:30 a.m.

Ambrose said 21-year-old Marc Peralta, of West New York, is charged with assault and a second man has been arrested, but his age and charges weren't released.

The investigation is ongoing.
