Suspect Sought After Young Woman Gunned Down In Newark
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police are looking for a suspect in a shooting that left a young woman dead in Newark.
It happened on South 11th Street around 10 p.m. Thursday.
Witnesses told reporters four or five people were sitting on the stoop of a home when a man came by waving a gun, CBS2 reported.
One neighbor named Daphne said she heard several shots.
"I'm like, is it firecrackers and I heard someone screaming, 'she's shot! she's shot!" she told 1010 WINS' Rebecca Granet.
When police arrived, they found 19-year-old Tammy Henderson dead from a gunshot wound, police said.
It's not clear if she was targeted.
"He walked up, shot, shot the glass and then went into the house and started shooting again and that's when she got shot," one nearby resident, whose daughters knew Henderson, told WCBS 880's Levon Putney. "It's shocking that it even happened because there is no commotion on this block."
The Essex County Sheriffs Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible in the case.
