Newark Police: Car Crashes Into Business, Driver Tries To Steal Owner's Cell Phone
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A driver is accused of crashing his car through the front door of a Newark business and trying to steal the owner's cell phone when he tried to take pictures of the accident.
Newark police said 22-year-old Hakeem Gayle, of Maplewood, was driving drunk when he crashed his silver 2009 Chevrolet Impala at 98 Elm Road around 9:40 p.m. Saturday.
Gayle grabbed the business owner's cell phone and tried to flee, but concerned citizens stopped him, police said.
Police said his car was involved in another crash just moments before at South Street and McCarter Highway.
Gayle was charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of marijuana, theft, criminal mischief and contempt.
His passenger, 20-year-old Juan Fonrose, of East Orange, was also charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.
No injuries were reported in the accidents.
