Power Outages Lead To Major Delays At Newark Airport

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A succession of power outages caused significant departure delays at Newark Liberty International Airport Monday evening.

The Federal Aviation Administration reported that a traffic management program had been instituted for departing flights at the airport.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey told CBS2 that around 5:05 p.m., United Airlines in Terminal C experienced a power outage. The power was restored around 5:45 p.m., but went out again 15 minutes later, the Port Authority said.

Power was restored for the second time around 7:20 p.m.

Departing flights were delayed between 1 hour and 31 minutes and 1 hour and 45 minutes as of the 7 p.m. hour during the outage, the FAA said.

Specifically, United Airlines was experiencing delays, the Port Authority said.

United reported that six United Express flights were canceled, but no mainline flights.

Service returned to normal later Monday evening.
