New York Remembers Political Powerhouse David Garth

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New Yorkers on Tuesday were remembering political consultant and powerhouse David Garth, who died this week at the age of 84.

Longtime friend and colleague George Arzt said Garth died Monday at his Manhattan home after a long illness.

Arzt said the veteran adviser was instrumental in the elections of New York City mayors John Lindsay, Edward Koch, Rudolph Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg.

He also worked on behalf of governors Hugh Carey in New York, Brendan Byrne in New Jersey and Ella Grasso in Connecticut.

Garth's funeral was to be be private, with a memorial service at a later date.

Arzt, who served as Koch's press secretary, said admirers frequently referred to Garth as a genius.
