Flooding impacts morning commute across NYC and N.J. – Team coverage

NEW YORK -- Flooding and fallen trees are causing road closures for the morning commute around New York and New Jersey. 

Roadways filled with floodwaters Tuesday night, leaving some drivers stranded for hours. So far, the highest rainfall totals have been reported in Bogata, New Jersey, which saw 5.47 inches of rain, and Fordham, New York, which saw 5.38 inches. 

Leftover showers are expected to linger Wednesday, but it should feel about 15 degrees cooler, with highs in the low 70s. Next up, we turn our attention to Debby, as the remnants are expected to reach our area Friday into Saturday. 

Flooding still an issue for the morning commute

New York City's travel advisory remains effect until noon after several major highways flooded, including the Major Deegan and Cross Bronx expressways and the Henry Hudson Parkway. 

Route 17 is partially closed near the Route 46 overpass in Teterboro, New Jersey due to flooding. 

"Coming up 17, I decided to stop at the diner, so I went and got a newspaper, and I realized it was closed off due to the weather," said one driver, who was trying to bring his daughter to Newark Liberty International Airport "Talking about maybe 2 feet of water over there, it's pretty bad. It's probably going to be like that for most part of the day, and some angry drivers, that's for sure."

Drivers should avoid standing water and leave extra time for the morning rush. Mass transit riders are encouraged to check with their carriers for the latest service updates. 

NJ Transit service was suspended on the Morris and Essex line because of downed trees, but has since resumed with delays. 

As for local airports, John F. Kennedy International Airport reported 81 delays and 63 cancellations around 7:15 a.m., LaGuardia Airport had 48 delays and 83 cancellations, and Newark Liberty International had 51 delays and 83 cancellations.

Latest power outages across New York & New Jersey

The storm also took down some power lines and trees around the area. 

At latest check, there were approximately 1,900 power outages.

  • JCP&L had 1,792 customers without power
  • PSE&G NJ had 73 without power
  • PSEG LI had 21 outages
  • Con Edison had 17
  • Orange and Rockland had six

One massive tree crushed several parked car in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx. Residents told CBS New York they had reported the tree to the city. 

"The Parks [Department] came by, like a week and a half ago, they were cutting branches, and we let them know, and they didn't do nothing about it," said a neighbor, whose car was damaged. "We've called since 10-o-clock last night, and nobody came almost until midnight."

Another large tree came down onto a car in Bayside, Queens.
