If Haason Reddick ends holdout soon, he has time to get ready for Jets' opener, head coach Robert Saleh says

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- There's still a chance Haason Reddick could play in the season opener for the New York Jets.

That is, if the star edge rusher ends his lengthy contract holdout before then.

"Yeah, I'm assuming he's in phenomenal shape," coach Robert Saleh said Tuesday. "He's a veteran. He knows what he needs to get ready. He's had success in multiple buildings and multiple schemes with multiple coaching staffs, so he's going to know what he needs to do to be ready for Week 1.

"So he still has plenty of time."

But the chances dwindle by the day.

Reddick, who turns 30 next month, remains locked in a dispute with the Jets over his contract. He requested to be traded on Aug. 12, but general manager Joe Douglas quickly nixed that by saying New York would not grant his wish to be dealt.

Reddick has not spoken publicly about his holdout, which reached its 36th day Tuesday. He wasn't with the team all offseason -- when he forfeited a $250,000 workout bonus -- or training camp, with fines racking up to $1.8 million, and counting.

He was placed on the reserve/did not report list on July 25, the second day of camp practice for the team.

The two-time Pro Bowl selection entered the offseason looking for a new contract and was given permission by the Eagles to seek a trade. He was acquired by the Jets in late March for a conditional third-round pick in 2026. The pick would become a second-rounder if Reddick plays 67.5% of the defensive snaps and gets 10 sacks this season.

Reddick, who has double-digit sacks in each of the past four years, has 58 in seven NFL seasons.

Saleh acknowledged he hadn't spoken to Reddick recently in an attempt to help resolve the situation.

"No," he said, "I've just been focusing on the guys that have been here."

Meanwhile, a personal trainer posted a video Monday on social media of Reddick doing some drills during a workout.

"Did it look good?" Saleh said, adding he hadn't seen it. "It bet it looked good."

The Jets open their season at San Francisco on Sept. 9 to face the defending NFC champion 49ers on "Monday Night Football."

NOTES: WR Mike Williams was expected to participate in team drills at practice Tuesday for the first time since joining the Jets in the offseason. Williams tore his ACL in Week 3 of last season while with the Chargers and has been ramping up his on-field activities with the Jets in recent weeks. ... Rookie QB Jordan Travis, a fifth-round pick out of Florida State, is likely to begin the season sidelined, Saleh said. Travis is currently on the non-football injury list after an ankle/leg injury ended his college career. "His rehab is going to be a little bit longer than we anticipated, obviously, but he's in a great place," Saleh said. "He's in every meeting. He goes to all the walkthroughs. Hopefully, it's something that we can revisit later in the year."
