New York City public pools reopen for summer, but with staffing problems

New York City swimming pools open to the public

NEW YORK -- A celebration at the Hamilton Fish pool on the Lower East Side kicked off the the New York City summer pool season.

The celebration comes amid an ongoing lifeguard shortage, which is causing many swim programs to be cancelled.

As CBS2's Elijah Westbrook reports, it's the first official splash of the season in New York City.

On a day as sunny and warm as Tuesday, Janae and her friends will tell you there's no better feeling than jumping in a pool.

"It was good," Janae said.

"It was a little cold, I'm sure, right?" Westbrook asked.

"When I jumped in, it was like, some water got in my nose," Janae said.

While the water is ready, staffing problems continue to be an issue at some locations, forcing those summer swim programs to be canceled.

Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine says he and Mayor Eric Adams says he will "leave no stone unturned" in the search for lifeguards

"The Parks system has figured out how to get every pool opened anyhow. We want people to know, don't worry. Come to your pools. Today is the first day of the season, and it's a safe and healthy way to enjoy the summer," Levine said.

While the search continues, Gov. Kathy Hochul says she's working to boost pay for New York lifeguards. Starting rates will go from about $15 per hour to $20 upstate, and downstate it goes from $18 to $22.

Despite the shortage, some are looking on the bright side because one thing remains certain. It will get hot this summer.

"How often do you think you'll come out to the pool?" Westbrook asked.

"Very often. 'Cause it's summertime," one person said.

From Tuesday through Labor Day, all 53 city pools will remain open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Be sure to check the city's website for updates and last minute changes.
