New York Area's Brutal Winter May Be Behind Drop In Blood Donations
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- The Red Cross has reminded residents to give blood.
There has been a significant drop in blood donations this year due to bad weather, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.
Red Cross spokesperson Maureen Wellman said that all types of blood are needed especially O-Negative and O-Positive.
"You know the thing is that demand is really constant for blood. There's only one source for blood and that's the volunteer blood donor. So, maintaining a sufficient supply is a delicate balance," Wellman said.
It only takes about an hour to give blood.
"When you donate blood we like to say that you can help save up to three lives and that's because each unit that you donate can be split up to three components which can potentially be transfused into three different patients," Wellman explained.
More information for potential donors is available through the Red Cross.
