How Will You Ring In 2017? People Share Their New Years Eve Traditions

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- With 2016 winding down, CBS2 asked folks about their favorite New Years Eve traditions.

Of course, there's always the ball drop in Times Square or drinks, dinner or dancing with friends.

But turns out, there are other ways to ring in the new year.

"At midnight, I just wake my husband up and say, 'Happy New Year honey!' and give him a kiss," Joyce Nelson, of Margate, New Jersey, told CBS2's Scott Rapoport.

Some people had less conventional plans.

"Video games all day, all night," one man said.

"Die my hair a different color," a woman said.

"Stuff pennies in your shoe for good luck for the new year," Matt Bone, of Margate, New Jersey, said. "I do it every year."

"You've got to have a dance off," another man said.

"I'm the guy that falls asleep in the corner in the La-Z-Boy," Sonny Martz, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, said with a laugh.

"We all carry our luggage and we walk around the street or a house and that means we will travel more during the year," said Brenda Tirado, who was visiting New York from Mexico.

Food also plays a big part in New Years Eve traditions and superstitions in many cultures, like grapes.

"It's good luck, it's really, really good luck," one man explained.

Or collared greens and black eyed peas.

"It means peace, prosperity and joy for the coming new year," a woman said.

"We eat pigs," a woman from Serbia said.

One couple told CBS2 they like to make a time capsule every New Years Eve so they can look back and remember their lives from years past.
