New Schools Chancellor Visits Bronx Middle School On First Day

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - It was the first day of school for New York City's new schools chancellor.

As WCBS 880's Alex Silverman reported, Carmen Farina stopped by a school in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx Thursday.

She said there was a reason for her visit to MS 223.

"One of the things I really want to focus on, particularly in this first year, are middle schools," Farina said.

She said middle school represents a pivotal time for students.

"We know by seventh grade who's going to graduate in 12th grade," said Farina.

She did not offer specifics for her middle school focus and deflected questions about charter schools, Silverman reported.

"Give me a break, it's my first day on the job," she joked.

Farina also said no decision had been made yet as to whether the city's schools would be closed on Friday because of the snowstorm. She said she would meet with other officials later Thursday to discuss the plan.
