Uber, NAACP Create Partnership To Hire Minority Drivers In New Jersey
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Uber is teaming up with the NAACP to hire more minority drivers around the country, including in the Tri-State area.
As WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported, the goal is to recruit about 3,000 minority drivers from low-income areas around the New Jersey, including Newark, Paterson and Jersey City.
"Unemployment leads to crime, leads to family breakups and a multiplicity of other social problems, so anything that produces jobs, I am in favor of," Jersey City NAACP President Bill Braker said.
Braker told Putney he's all for his organization helping Uber recruit.
"Particularly our young black people," he said.
"Kudos for the effort and we would welcome the same partnership," said state Limousine Association President Jeff Shanker.
Shanker added that he feels companies like Uber need to be regulated. He's calling on state lawmakers to pass licensing and insurances requirements for car services like Uber and Lyft.
