New Jersey Gas Tax Hike Is Boosting Uber Fares
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New Jersey's gas tax increase is going to affect Uber rides as well.
The ride-hailing company said Monday that it will raise fares by 2 cents per mile to help drivers pay for gas after the tax goes up by 23 cents per gallon Tuesday.
Uber drivers use their own cars and are responsible for paying for their own gas.
The company estimates that a trip from the Journal Square PATH station in Jersey City to Newark Liberty International Airport will increase by 20 cents because of the new fares.
The New Jersey Assembly passed a measure this month to regulate ride-hailing services in the state. That measure still needs approval in the Senate.
The increase will give New Jersey the sixth-highest gas taxes in the nation, up from 49th.
