Nearly 2 Dozen School Board Candidates Against Common Core Elected Into Office On LI
LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Voters on Long Island have put words into action after voting 21 school board candidates who do not support Common Core into office.
As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, Mary Calamia, a clinical social worker, said students are becoming sick and are refusing to go to school because of stress over the Common Core curriculum.
"I have kids who are self-mutilating, not sleeping. I have a close friend whose son's anxiety was so bad he was going to the emergency room almost every other day -- she lost her job," said Calamia.
Calamia added that she's not surprised voters on Long Island wanted their voices heard and elected candidates who are in favor of opting out of the Common Core testing.
"And I think they are trying to make changes. Any word they can to elicit change, to get us out of Common Core. When they say it's not going to be fought or won by Boards of Ed, that doesn't mean there are things that Boards of Ed can't do," she said.
Many parents on Long Island opted their children out of Common Core testing that was held in early April.
