Attorney General Merrick Garland swears in 200 new U.S. citizens on Ellis Island
NEW YORK -- There was a celebration of citizenship Saturday at Ellis Island.
Attorney General Merrick Garland led a swearing-in ceremony for 200 new citizens.
The citizenship candidates came from 57 countries, including Albania, China, Ghana, Lebanon, Nepal and Pakistan.
The ceremony comes as we celebrate National Constitution and Citizenship Day, which marks the day in 1787 when the Constitutional Convention approved the document that formed the framework of the United States.
Over the next week, there will be more than 235 naturalization ceremonies across the country, welcoming more than 19,000 new citizens.
