Nassau County Scaling Back Use Of Speed Cameras In School Zones
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Nassau County is drastically cutting back on its controversial speed camera program in school zones.
Instead of operating on school days from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., the problem-plagued program will, beginning Monday, operate from 7 to 9 a.m. and again from 2 to 4 p.m., WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported.
The speed camera program has drawn protests and outrage from residents, with some lawmakers calling for its repeal.
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano said a change in driving habits and resident concerns led to the cutback.
Many residents -- some who have complained about receiving several $80 tickets -- have complained that there aren't enough signs warning drivers of speed camera locations.
"They're just trying to get the money for the county," said one driver, who added that the reduced enforcement makes more sense.
