Mangano Proposes Another Property Tax Hike For Nassau County
MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- After running on a re-election platform of never raising taxes, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano wants to hike property taxes for a second year in a row.
This time, he's seeking to raise the tax by 1.2 percent, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.
For the average homeowner, that means about $23.
Mangano, a Republican who unveiled his $2.95 billion budget proposal Tuesday, told Newsday the hike would pay for the increase in police salaries.
Legislative Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams said taxes seem to increase every year and it's causing young people to leave Long Island because it's too expensive. He added that some Nassau residents are also seeing tax increases for school districts and town governments.
"There are multiple areas that we can look at without going to a tax increase," Abrahams, a Democrat, told Hall.
A Mangano spokesperson said residents earning less than $500,000 would not pay a dime more next year because, under a state program, they would receive a full rebate in October 2016.
The budget must be approved by the county Legislature by November.
