Nassau County Officials Call For Reversal Of Police Precinct Mergers
MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- There are now calls to undo the four police precinct mergers that have been completed in Nassau County.
"We didn't agree with any precincts being consolidated, and we truly believe that Nassau County taxpayers are not saving any money by having these buildings become open shells," said Kevan Abrahams, the Democratic leader of the Nassau County Legislature.
As WCBS 880's Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported, the call follows the county's decision to cancel future precinct consolidation plans.
It appears cost is the reason for the cancellation, Xirinachs reported.
Carver told 1010 WINS earlier Monday that County Executive Ed Mangano's office told him that the county plans to reopen the 5th Precinct early next year, and that the 1st and 7th precincts will not be merged as originally planned in 2012.
The original plan was to merge eight Nassau County precincts into four in an effort to save about $20 million annually.
Police Union President James Carver says a complete reversal of the merger plan would be best.
"I think there should be eight precincts. We've always advocated that eight precincts is the way to go," he said.
However, the acting police commissioner says there are no plans to reverse any precinct mergers.
