Nassau County Launches Local Women's Equality Party
MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- There's a new political party in town on Long Island with its focus on women, WCBS 880's Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported.
Nassau County is launching the Women's Equality Party to help strengthen and fight for women's rights, says organizer JoAnn Smith of Planned Parenthood.
"Women's legislation, or legislation that has an impact on women's access to healthcare, is under attack," Smith said.
More than 100 women and men showed up for the kickoff Thursday, some wearing t-shirts with the party's slogan: "We are women and we vote."
As Xirinachs reported, the party will endorse and support candidates running for political office.
"We are more than 50 percent of voters, we are more than 50 percent of the citizens and we are more than 50 percent of workforce. We should not be treated as special interest," Spokeswoman M. Tracey Brooks said.
