N.J. Mother Returns From 9-Day Canoe Trip To Raise Awareness About Water Quality
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Finishing her nine-day, 350-mile journey, Margo Pellegrino tied up her canoe on the Passaic River in Newark Friday.
"It was good. I got a little sunburned, I wasn't as religious with the sunblock as I should have been," she said.
The mother of two from Medford Lakes paddled from Trenton, down around Cape May and up the coastline to raise awareness about water quality, WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported.
"This is about my kids, this is about everyone's kid," Pellegrino said before she left on her trip. "We're really messing around with New Jersey's water resources."
Pellegrino is a supporter of the environmental group Blue Frontier Campaign, which is raising awareness about New Jersey's ailing waterway system.
"When you start seeing signs within your ecosystem, that things are dying off and changing, it's really time to pay attention," Pellegrino said.
The worst water, she said, was in the Passaic and on the Delaware south of Trenton.
"It smells like an industrial river," she said.
Pellegrino says if we stop hurting thw ater, it can get better.
