MTA Releases Special Super Bowl MetroCards
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- With Super Bowl coming XLVIII coming to MetLife Stadium next month, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has issued a series of commemorative MetroCards in the New York City subway system.
In conjunction with the New York/New Jersey Super Bowl Host Committee, the MetroCards have been on sale at about 400 subway stations. There are four card designs, each with a unique front, and a message on the back reading, "Together, the National Football League and the New York/New Jersey Super Bowl Host Committee are bringing the greatest game to the greatest region."
The MTA began distributing the commemorative MetroCards at random this week. A total of 1 million cards were printed, with equal numbers of each version.
The cards were designed and purchased by the Super Bowl Host Committee.
Getting one of the cards from a vending machine is just a matter of random chance, the MTA said.
"The cards are added to an existing supply of standard MetroCards, so there is no guarantee that purchasing there will result in the acquisition of a card featuring the Super Bowl design," MTA spokesman David Ortiz told 1010 WINS.
The commemorative MetroCards will be distributed through Feb. 3.
