More Speed Cameras Being Installed Near NYC Schools
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New York City is installing more speed cameras near schools as part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's Vision Zero plan.
The announcement was made Tuesday outside Public School 95 in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The Department of Transportation has classified the area as a high-crash corridor.
"Our kids are going to be safer walking to school and coming home because of this new enforcement," de Blasio said in a statement. "We are sending a powerful message that we take safety near our schools seriously and we will enforce the law to keep children safe."
Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg said drivers should take heed as students return to class this week.
"The additional 120 intersections we can equip with speed cameras gives students an advantage when school returns Thursday," Trottenberg said in a statement.
New York City already had 20 of the devices. Legislation signed into law in June authorized up to 120 more.
Speeders caught by the cameras will be mailed a $50 ticket.
