Cops: Suspects Steal Thousands During Service At Bronxville Church
BRONXVILLE, N.Y (CBSNewYork) -- Police are searching for suspects who allegedly stole thousands of dollars from a Catholic Church in Bronxville.
According to Father Augustine Badgely says a man waited for the right moment during the 5 p.m. service at St. Joseph's Church on New Years Eve -- just after the collection -- and went into the sacristy behind the altar before the locked cash bag was put into this safe.
"Usually we have a priest or a sacrosanct here and it just happened to be one of those occasions when no one was in here during the mass," Badgely told CBS2's Brian Conybeare.
Police said there were actually two well-dressed suspects who got away with thousands of dollars after blending in with churchgoers. One of the suspects was even polite enough to hold the door open for parishioners as they entered the church for mass.
"Its awful absolutely awful," Steven Shaw, member of St. Joseph's, said. "Middle of the holidays, you know, you don't expect something like this."
Jennifer Ungvary said she always feels safe in the quiet, upscale village.
"Just because we live in Bronxville, I guess we have to realize these things can happen anywhere," Ungvary said.
