Police searching for Gary Cabana, 60, suspect in stabbing of 2 employees inside Museum of Modern Art
NEW YORK -- Police have released new surveillance video showing Saturday's vicious stabbing of two workers at the Museum of Modern Art.
The museum was closed Sunday and police are still searching for the suspect, CBS2's Thalia Perez reported.
The chilling video shows the suspect, identified as 60-year-old Gary Cabana, jumping behind the reception desk and repeatedly lunging toward the workers, stabbing two of them, a man and a woman. Police say the suspect became irate after learning that his membership had expired because of two previous disorderly conduct incidents. As a result, he wasn't allowed to enter to watch a film that was being screened.
Police say it happened just after 4 p.m. Cellphone video obtained by CBS2 shows the chaos that erupted after the attack as people fled to safety and police searched for the suspect.
On Sunday morning, police released three photos of the suspect. In two of the photos, Cabana is wearing a surgical mask. Perez later spoke with people who showed up at the museum hoping to get in but not knowing it was closed.
"We've been like all over the place. Tourists doing doing touristy stuff and wanted to look at the sculpture garden this time." Rani Banerjee said. "It's scary, right? What if we were there at the time this happened?"
"I'm visiting from Paris and I saw a lot of people here and I was thinking what is going on, and I'm really shocked," Narges Skyker added.
Police say the victims were rushed to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
It appears Cabana posted on Facebook on Sunday. Police said they are aware of the post.
A sign on the door says the museum will reopen on Tuesday.
