Brett Gardner, Jeurys Familia Long Shots To Make All-Star Team

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's not looking good for either local player hoping to play in this month's All-Star game.

Mets closer Jeurys Familia and Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner are final vote candidates for the Midsummer Classic, which will be played in Cincinnati on Tuesday.

Fans are voting for the final spot on each roster, and Major League Baseball announced the results thus far on Wednesday.

Gardner trails left fielder Yoenis Cespedes, second baseman Brian Dozier and third baseman Mike Moustakas.

Familia is in even more trouble. He needs to leapfrog starting pitchers Clayton Kershaw, Johnny Cueto and Carlos Martinez and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki.

Even if the players aren't voted in, there's a chance they could be selected by the All-Star managers if one or more All-Stars are unavailable to play.

Voting will conclude at 4 p.m. on Friday. To vote, click here.

Both Gardner and Familia are eyeing their first All-Star appearances. Gardner is batting .296 with nine home runs and 39 RBIs. The 31-year-old speedster has hit 21 doubles, stolen 15 bases and posted a .373 on-base percentage.

Familia, 25, took over the closer's role after Jenrry Mejia was suspended 80 games for using performance-enhancing drugs. The right-hander has been brilliant, converting 23 of 25 save opportunities and pitching to a 1.13 ERA. In 39 2/3 innings pitched he's struck out 41 and walked 12.

Dellin Betances and Mark Teixeira are representing the Yankees at the Midsummer Classic, and Jacob deGrom is representing the Mets.
