Decommissioned military ocean flare found in sand on Rockaway Beach

NYPD determines decommissioned military ocean flare washed ashore in Queens

NEW YORK -- A military-style object washed up on Rockaway Beach on Friday. 

A Parks Department employee spotted the 3-foot-long cylinder on the sand near Beach 84th Street in Queens just before 9:30 a.m. 

Sources said NYPD determined the cylinder was a decommissioned ocean flare, which is basically a smoke device, that apparently came from a naval vessel . 

The NYPD Bomb Squad determined the flare was non-operational and non-explosive, sources said.
