Former Marine Offers Free Security To Hempstead Military Recruitment Center
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The recent deadly terror attack on a military recruitment center in Tennessee spurred one civilian to provide security for a center here in New York.
As WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported, former Marine and retired NYPD officer Arthur Grix is offering his security service for free outside a military recruitment center in Hempstead.
"I cannot and will not allow my fellow Marines to be unarmed to defend themselves against terrorist attacks, especially on our soil," he said.
Grix said it's crazy that recruiters aren't allowed to be armed, especially after the attack in Chattanooga. He said they need security and even suggested National Guard protection.
"Have that put in right away, temporarily, until they come to their senses and allow these men to be armed inside," Grix said.
On July 16, authorities said Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, 24, stopped his car and sprayed dozens of bullets first at a recruiting center for all branches of the military, then drove to a Navy-Marine training center 7 miles away.
The attacks were over within a half-hour. A total of five members of the U.S. military were killed.
Abdulazeez was fatally shot by police.
