CBS2: Local Baseball Prospect Dies From Injuries After Shooting Outside Burger King In Yonkers
YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A promising baseball prospect from Yonkers who was shot in the head last month has died.
Michael Nolan, 23, died from his injuries on Thursday, CBS2's Andrea Grymes reported.
Since being critically injured in the Sept. 18 shooting, Nolan's family had been holding out hope and keeping a daily vigil at Jacobi Hospital.
But his parents announced Thursday that their son was brain dead, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported. His family says his organs will be donated.
The shooting happened in the parking lot of a Burger King on Central Avenue. Police said Nolan was standing by his car with friends when a vehicle drove by. That's when witnesses told cops the driver pointed a gun out the window and fired several shots in Nolan's general direction. He was shot in the head and arm.
Investigators said they initially believed the shooting stemmed from a drag race.
"This is not a random shooting," Yonkers Police Chief Charles Garner said at the time.
At the time of the shooting, Nolan's father, Jimmy Nolan, said his son was a 6-foot-8 lefty pitcher with a promising future.
"He's a good kid," he said. "He was drafted by the Oakland A's. He had a full ride to college."
Since news of Nolan's death, condolences have been pouring in on social media.
The GM of the Oakland A's released a statement on Twitter saying: "On behalf of the entire A's organization, I send my deepest condolences to Donna and Jimmy Nolan. Michael will always be a member of the A's family, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends for their tragic loss."
In another tweet, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said: "My thoughts and prayers remain with Jim, Donna, Joe, Nick and Jimmy Nolan following the loss of their bright and talented son, Michael."
On Thursday, Nolan's mother Donna wrote on Facebook: "You are my heart & soul and you have fought hard but I know your [sic] tired so go rest my angel it's ok."
So far, no arrests have been made and police are still looking for a suspect.
